Jacob lost a tooth at school today.  He was excited!

Bottle feeding #48.  She hasn't figured it out yet.

Ewe #514 and her triplets!

Ewe #3's twin lambs started having bad diarrhea today.  We are keeping them cleaned up and treating them with pesto bismol, electrolytes, and spectogard.  This evening we noticed that Ewe #514 was in labor.  After the boys were asleep we went back outside to check on her.  It was cold this evening - burr! The ewe started laying on her side and pushing hard.  Finally, after about a hour, she delivered her first lamb. A girl weighing 9 lbs 5 oz.  We moved them into a stall.  The mom was licking her lamb a lot (she's a crazy licker) and pawing her.  The lamb tried to get up but couldn't.  After awhile we went in to help.  Something didn't seem right with this lamb.  Her neck stretched far to the left and she leaned that way when we tried to help her stand.  I believe she has something called wry neck.  We tubed her with some colostrum but didn't think she was going to make it. After a while the ewe started pushing hard again.  She delivered a large boy lamb, weighing 12 lbs 3 oz.  He looked good but was struggling to stand. He's has curly hair and is so cute.  While we worked on him we noticed two hind feet so I delivered a third lamb, a healthy boy weighing 10 lbs 5 oz. We tubed these two lambs also.   These lambs were so wet it took all of our towels to dry them.   Suddenly the girl was trying to stand. She was the first to nurse with me helping her balance.  We worked on these lambs until around 1am.  They were doing much better by then and all had learned to nurse. We came back out to check on them at 3:00 and at 5:30 and they were doing very well.   The twin lambs with the diarrhea are doing much better too.

Ewe #3 and her twins

I was talking to Vikki on the phone as I walked out to check on the ewes (around 11:00).  I looked in the paddock and noticed that Ewe #3 had just delivered a lamb.  I asked Vikki to call Jared.  The ewe was licking her lamb.  I slowly dragged the lamb by its hindlegs into a stall (with the ewe following and licking).  I dried the lamb and took care of it.  Soon a second lamb came and Jared got there just minutes later.  This mom was really nervous. We gave her some time alone to lick and take care of her lambs but they weren't getting up.  Jared held the ewe so I could pump some colostrum and we tubed the lambs.  The first lamb is a girl (8.0 lbs) and the second a boy (7 lbs 7 oz).  The girl lamb became very hypothermic.  Jared brought in a heat lamb and his propane heater to help us warm her up in the stall. We worked on this lamb for over an hour.  Jared headed back to work around 2:00.  We tubed the lambs again before he left.  The boys started nursing but I hadn't seen the girl nursing yet.  We checked on them often and made sure they had warm mouths.

We are trying to graft this triplet lamb onto the ewe that lost her triplets.  Jared and I had fun building this headgate today.  This ewe held her back legs together and wouldn't let the lamb nurse so we ended up giving her back to her mom.  It didn't take long in the headgate for her mom to remember her.  We are going to be supplementing milk for this lamb.  With two much larger siblings she is not gaining weight well.

Vikki came over today and stayed with Eli (and the sheep) while we went to a play at Jacob's school. Acting up Theatre came to the boys school and has been working with the 3rd and 4th graders.  The show was very entertaining and the kids did great!  Jacob only had a couple lines but he spoke them loud and clear.

Teaching Kenzie how to use the picker and how to spin wool.  She also did some hand carding.

Our package arrived today with over 6 lbs of Romney wool.  Worked on picking it and washing it today.

Jared and I had fun making this wool picker

We will use it on the wool before it is hand carded

Today we had our IEP transition meeting for Jacob.  This included the Elementary and Middle school teams. Wow I can't believe Jacob is going to be in middle school!  The meeting went very well.
