Jared writing here to report on Jacob's first day of cub scouts. Jacob is in the Tiger cub group which is all first graders. There were 9 boys including Jacob. Back in september we went to the first pack meeting to get to know the lay of the land so to speak. We were prepared to meet his den leader when one of the pack leaders sat down at the Tiger cub table and said "we'll need one of the parents in the tiger cub group to be the den leader". I was surprised to say the least. So after some thought I volunteered to be the den leader for the Tiger cubs. There were suppose to be 6 kids in the den, however 3 extras showed up including our neighbor kid, Jacob's good friend Nik. Jacob also had one of his buddies who came to his 6th birthday party showed up as well. Typical dens are 7 to 9 kids so it was a full house, at this age the parents stick around as well which can be helpful. Our den will be doing the song at the next pack meeting and I tried to get the kids to recite the "Beans Beans" poem....they thought it was funny but didn't want to do it. And decided on a much tamer apple song. We had fun. Learned the Scout moto, salute, sign, handshake and went over the Law of the Pack and the Cub Scout promise. We also learned the secret meaning behind Webelos. It's a cub scout secret. The kids said they had fun, and one of the pack leaders who showed up to make sure everything went well, since it was my first time, said it went really well so that's a relief. She had to leave right away so I took the reins right from the get go...jump right in. Jacob enjoyed making the scrap books and having a direct connection to the den leader. Two other parents want to be co-leaders which will be nice, I"m not sure how we'll coordinate that yet. So our cub scout journey has begun, every first and third tuesdays are den meetings and every 2nd tuesday are pack meetings. In two years I have a feeling I'll be doing the Tiger Cubs again with Adam. So I'm excited for the next den meeting, not sure what we are doing yet. I had a nice 3x5 card which I wrote down my agenda and that was really helpful in moving through the hour. This is kind of fun typing on Kimmy's computer. She doesn't let me touch it very often.

I recommend a 3 x 5 card with a list of items to do -- I used them regularly for years. Now I write out a plan on the computer, print it out, and look at it only when I go blank. Just writing out a plan helps keep me on track.
It sounds like fun. I am sure we can stock up on ideas over Thanksgiving. You will have a lot of good resources. What will they say when you teach them "Ooey, gooey was a worm" ?
