This evening Eli's right thumb was slammed in a cedar chest lid. I could tell by his scream that it was really, really bad. I picked him up and hurried out the door, yelling for Jared. He came running and calmly said we needed to get to the ER. I looked down and saw that the top of his thumb was just hanging. It was horrible! We wrapped it, got an ice pack, and rushed to the hospital. Adam was really worried and cried that whole way to the hospital. Jacob was also worried but tried to comfort Adam. He told Adam that the doctor would sew it back up just like his friends nose. Jared sped to the ER and dropped us off by the door. There they checked us in and wrapped his thumb/hand. I tried to comfort Eli while we waited for a room. He only stopped crying for a short time when he saw this large paper mache dog in the room. It was over an hour before they brought him something for pain. Then we took him for x-rays. The x-ray technican gave him a bunch of stickers which he really liked, especially the dog ones. He started acting really goofy. The boys got some crayons and coloring books. Eli kept taking a crayon out of the box I was holding and then dropping it back in and saying, "Uh oh!" The doctor came in after a couple hours. He had Jared and the boys go in the waiting room. I stayed to be with Eli and help hold. The doctor unwrapped his thumb but left the room for a few minutes. Eli's thumb was still bleeding bad with the bandage off. A nurse came in to help also. I sat next to Eli as he lay on the table and held his legs and left arm. The doctor gave him a shot to numb his thumb which he screamed for. Then they put a ring ternakit on to slow the bleeding - ouch! Eli screamed during most of the procedure and I tried to comfort him. After the top of his thumb was reattatched it started to turn pink from blood flow which was good. The doctor said he'd repaired alot of fingertips. He did a really good job on Eli's thumb. The nurse then bandaged it up. The doctor said we need to come back in 2 day to have it rechecked and rebandaged. We got the x-ray results which showed that he also fractured the tip of the bone. Eli got a bear, named Burke, which he gave hugs and kisses. We had to stop at the pharmacy and gas station before going home. It was around midnight when we got home. Adam was a little scared and wanted Daddy to lay with him for a little while. Eli was in a good, funny mood. He went to sleep quickly after we tucked him in.

Whew! The details make this even worse. What a terrible evening! But you all seemed to handle it in stride.
I was wondering how the brothers responded. That is surely a scary thing to have happen to your beloved little brother.
