Blanch and her boy lamb

Frannie just after lambing a white girl lamb

I went out to the barn at 3:30 to check the sheep. Everything looked normal but I noticed that one of the ewes must have passed a water bag which looked blue in the dirt.   I checked on Blanch and she had mucous.  I went inside to wake Jared because we needed to check her.  It was -2 degrees outside. Burr!  When I checked the lambs position I found that it was a large lamb coming head first and feet back. I pulled the head out so I could put a snare on it before pushing it back into the uterus. Then I tried to keep it back far enough (with mom pushing) so I could gently bring a leg forward withoout tearing anything.  I got a leg forward and put a snare on it. Again I had to push back so I could have enough room to get the second leg forward.  I pulled the lamb which was alive and healthy.   We tubed the lamb and took care of him and his mom. Got her some warm molasses water and hay.  I checked her but didn't feel any more lambs  This boy lamb weighs 13.6 lbs.  Jared and I lay in bed for about an hour before Jared went out to check on her again.  Jared came in and said there was another lamb!  I thought Blanch had had another but it was Frannie.   Frannie is a new mom so she was nervous.  She wouldnt follow her lamb so we had to use grain to catch her. She was a little nervous about letting her lamb nurse. We worked with them and tubed the lamb so we wouldn't have to worry about her while we were at work. This was a cute girl lamb weighing 13#
